StreetArtCEI

The Project

Using the conceptual and methodological tools of intercultural studies, the StreetArtCEI project was born with the aim of blurring the boundaries between dominant and marginal cultures, their practices, symbols and aesthetic manifestations, in the open, mobile and ephemeral space of the city. StreetArtCEI is a virtual museum and an open digital archive, with thousands of permanently updated images, distributed across geographical and author routes, maps and Points of Interest (POI). The website also contains scientific material, collections donated by amateurs, information on street music and interviews.

Since 2018, StreetArtCEI has been cooperating with the project “O Direito à Cidade – Entre Street Art e Lei” of the CIJE - Faculty of Law of the University of Porto, which aims to discuss the legal regime of graffiti and street art from the perspective of Portuguese and Brazilian law. The lockdowns could have irreparably jeopardized a project that by its very nature lives on urban movements. However, CEI researchers decided to create a second project to locate, photograph, catalog and map the street art manifestations that emerged during the long months of the pandemic. Street Art Against Covid was active between April 2020 and January 2022, having won the Santander Universitario Uni-Covid19 award for academic initiatives with a social impact.
